Who we are: Our history

WaterAid Canada’s history stretches back to 1987, when it was founded by Michael Lubbock, and established as a registered Canadian charity under the name WaterCan/EauVive.

Guided by its vision of Clean Water for All, WaterCan established itself as a leading Canadian charity dedicated exclusively to helping the world’s poorest people gain access to clean drinking water, basic sanitation and hygiene education. Working with local partner organisations in eastern Africa, WaterCan supported small-scale, community-driven projects that dramatically improved quality of life in rural areas and urban slums.

Over the course of 26 years WaterCan helped to create more than 1.2 million success stories – children, women and men whose lives were dramatically transformed through improved access to clean drinking water and basic sanitation.

In 2013, WaterCan brought its 26 years of experience and expertise to the global federation WaterAid as its Canadian member. By joining forces we believe we can have a bigger impact, ensuring everyone, everywhere has access to clean water and sanitation by 2030.

WaterCan became formally known as WaterAid Canada in mid-2014. Read more about this strategic alliance.
